On the other, many of his works composed in the s were heavily criticized; for example, the neoclassical partita, but above all the dodecaphonic Nekrolog. Those years of study were no conscious break, but life and death agonising inner conflict. The first signs of this appear in his Symphony No. Tintinnabuli music can be defined as a distinct technique, which in essence unites two monodic lines of structure — melody and triad — into one, inseparable ensemble.

It creates an original duality of voices, the course and inner logic of which are defined by strict, even complicated mathematical formulas. The relationship between these two voices follows a predetermined scheme, which varies in detail from work to work. One line is who we are, and the other line is who is holding and takes care of us.

Sometimes I say that the melodic line is our reality, our sins. But the other line is forgiving the sins. Thus, the music of the active first movement consists of performing two opposite processes which, is followed by clusters in fortissimo. The main mood of the contemplative middle part is created by descending four-tone chains, the frozen mood of which is contrasted by the chromatic melody of the French horn based on the B-A-C-H motif.

After the development of the horn part comes the culmination of the second movement, where at the point of the golden section in the 11th bar the four-tone figure begins to move in the opposite direction. This one note, or a silent beat, or a moment of silence, comforts me. I work with very few elements - with one voice, two voices.

I build with primitive materials - with the triad, with one specific tonality.

The three notes of a triad are like bells and that is why I call it tintinnabulation. While typically in tintinnabuli the melodic voice is based on an abstract procedure or derived from text, here the melody is freely composed, but with the two voices irrevocably joined according to the tintinnabuli principle. The right hand plays notes from the scale of B minor, while the left hand plays notes from the B minor triad.
