Most modern people seem to waver between seeing medieval women as hopelessly oppressed or wonderful ly free. In either case they usually assume that the experiences of medieval women are distant, arcane, and irrelevant to the challenges of the present.

Women are under-represented in the records of all disciplines: little particular evidence of them can be prised from mediaeval historical records and the archaeological record is similarly limited.
